Meet NC's newest STEM Schools of Distinction

Many schools across our state facilitate quality STEM instruction; maximizing community partnerships and driving opportunities for students, developing the skills necessary for future success. NCDPI and the North Carolina State Board of Education want to recognize each and every school that exemplifies the qualities associated with STEM success. To identify and recognize exemplary STEM Schools and STEM Programs, the STEM School of Distinction was developed. This program provides a standard definition of quality STEM implementation using the STEM School Progress Rubric as the framework and backbone of the application process for implementing the five overarching STEM principles. Schools have an opportunity to submit an application providing narrative and artifactual evidence of their schools distinguished STEM approaches to leading and learning. We have highlighted two schools receiving this honor already this year - Lakeshore Elementary and Hawks Nest STEAM Academy - and we're pleased to highlight two more for you that recently received the designation - Oaksboro STEM Choice School and Snow Hill Primary School. Congratulations to everyone involved at each of these schools!.

Lessons learned from afterschool, summer learning and enrichment efforts in 2021

This webinar from the National Governor's Association highlights lessons learned for afterschool and summer learning programs during the pandemic and summer 2021. Panelists offer recommendations regarding accelerating learning, re-engaging students, and effective use of federal funding that schools can implement as students continue to learn inside and outside the classroom this year and as leaders begin planning for summer 2022.

NCDPI Report: Public schools see minor rebound in student enrollment

Earlier this month NCDPI released its first look at how many students returned this year to the state’s public schools — charter and traditional. Anyone hoping that traditional public schools were going to rebound to pre-pandemic levels were disappointed to find out that while they have increased some from last year, they are still below where they were before COVID-19. Meanwhile, charter schools continue to gain students, though at a slower pace than last year.
