Four North Carolina teachers have received the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) – the highest honor bestowed by the federal government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science teaching. For the 2017 nomination year, recipients include: Wendy Bartlett, Regan High School, Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools (Mathematics) and Laura Lawrence, Asheville School, Asheville (Science). The 2018 recipients are: Elizabeth Gillikin, Smyrna Elementary School, Carteret County Public Schools (Mathematics), and Kathryn Matthews, Valle Crucis Elementary School, Watagua County Schools (Science). Wendy Bartlett and Kathryn Matthews also are previous CASMT Awardees. This year's recipients represent two nomination years, one of teachers in kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms, and the other in 7th through 12th grade classrooms. View the full list. Astronauts finish historic all-woman spacewalk

On Oct 18, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and NCSSM alum Christina Koch performed the first all-woman spacewalk. Koch and Meir replaced a faulty battery charge/discharge unit that failed to activate after a previous spacewalk. |
