STEM for World Youth Skills Day

Skills are the foundation of modern life. When youth have the chance to gain career skills earlier in life, they build character, confidence, and success. Society benefits from having a generation of highly-skilled workers. These are the principals behind World Youth Skills Day, celebrated every year on July 15. Follow the #SkillsForAll hashtag to learn how skills can help individuals, communities, and countries create a more prosperous future. High-quality STEM opportunities help youth develop critical-thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. These skills are key for future job security, as STEM-related jobs are some of the fastest growing jobs in the country and 80 percent of all future jobs will require STEM literacy and skills. For each of the components of STEM, you will find opportunities in The Connectory, which offers a streamlined way to take advantage of dozens of learning opportunities (summer camps, workshops, career fairs, competitions, and other time-bound STEM events). NC STEM Center is proud to collaborate with The Connectory. If you have a program doing great work to promote STEM education in North Carolina, please share it through our web portal. Through our partnership with The Connectory, programs listed on NC STEM Center also are sent to The Connectory’s national database for possible inclusion. Please join us in recognizing World Youth Skills Day this Saturday (July 15) and enjoy your e-Update. Tweet us @NCSTEM with suggestions, feedback or other thoughts about this issue or future ones.

Observations and Guidance on Implementing Personlized Learning

RAND-spotlight-1.jpg

PL, or Personalized learning, is an approach to education that seeks to allow what and how a student learns on a daily basis to be less constrained by the needs of other students or by external grade-level requirements. As part of a recent study for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, RAND Corporation researchers have sought to identify what PL looks like in a small sample of schools that were implementing PL approaches schoolwide. STEM Trivia

Last issue's STEM Trivia question: Approximately 2 percent of all people have what eye color? The answer: Green. Thanks for all the participation and congratulations to @mcbride_edutech for being the first to provide the correct answer. Let's see how well you do with this week's question ...

When was the last time a total solar eclipse occurred in the Lower 48 states? Bonus point if you know when the next time a total solar eclipse will traverse the United States from coast to coast.

Think you know the answer? Click here to submit your response to @NCSTEM. If you choose not to click that link, please include the word "answer" in your tweet so we can find it (the link will automatically do so for you). We’ll announce winners in the next e-Update!
