STEM Schools of Distinction Archive
2016-2017 STEM Schools of Distinction
The N.C. Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) Education Center has recognized 7 schools as “STEM Schools of Distinction”, the highest designation for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in North Carolina.
Four of those schools have been selected at the “Model Level of Achievement”, the recognition program’s highest level. Those schools are:
- Central Cabarrus High School STEM Magnet Program, Cabarrus County Schools
- Coltrane-Webb STEM Elementary School, Cabarrus County Schools
- North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, Durham County
- Patriots STEM Elementary School, Cabarrus County Schools
The three schools selected as “Prepared Level” are:
- Davie County High School STEM Center, Davie County Schools
- Nesbitt Discovery Academy, Buncombe County Schools
- JW York Elementary School, Wake County Public Schools
2015-2016 STEM Schools of Distinction

- Wake STEM Early College High School, Wake County Schools
- Brentwood Magnet Elementary School of Engineering, Wake County Schools
- Atkins Academic and Technology High School, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools
- Blessed Sacrament School, Burlington
The three schools selected as “Prepared Level” are:
- James Kenan Sr. High School, Duplin County Schools
- Riverside Middle School, Martin County Schools
- East Cary Middle School, Wake County Schools
2014-2015 STEM Schools of Distinction
The N.C. Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) Education Center has recognized 13 schools as STEM Schools of Distinction, the highest designation for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in North Carolina.
Exploris Middle School, a public charter school in Wake County, was the only school chosen as a “Model Level of Achievement” STEM school, the highest level available in the recognition program.
The other 12 schools receiving the “Prepared Level” distinction include:
